Been Busy

I have been in Arizona for my Grandmother’s funeral. It’s been a special time for me – hearing lovely stories about her life and celebrating the gracious woman she was.

This last week was spent helping my mom put out some of Grandma’s things she inherited, like a few pieces of silver brought over on the boat from Sweden, hung here in a shadow box.

We also hung a few pieces of china from different sides of the family.

I like the way they look together, especially in the mirror, which is the view from the entry.

As much as I love a good DIY project, I think there’s nothing like incorporating family heirlooms or pieces with special meaning into home decor. I smiled and thought of Grandma each time I sat down at the dining table this week and got a glimpse of the plates or silverware.

PS Evelyn inherited my grandmother’s eyes. Even better than china.

  10. Heirlooms are the best to decorate with in my opinion, they give a sense of history and purpose to your rooms. I'm sorry to hear of your loss but am happy you could spend the time with family appreciating her life and what she meant to each of you. The last shot of your baby is beautiful!

  14. What an emotional trip that must have been. We have been cleaning out my grandfather's house this past week…and while so sad, I love being surrounded by the things he loved so much. Now some of them are my house and I will love them even more.

  15. It's a special way to celebrate a loved one to feature them in your home. I was given 2 of my grandmothers vintage bird prints by my parents who just had them stored in our basement. They were literally the inspiration behind the entire decor of our living/dining/kitchen area and are so special to me. I think of her looking down on me and being so proud whenever I see them. I hope you and your family feel that way too.

  18. You know Jenny, I've never thought of hanging actual, real, heirloom china on the wall, but that is SUCH a great way to enjoy china that you rarely use. Thanks so much for this idea – I have some grandmothers of my own who would love to be honored in that way.

Also, I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm glad that your family is able to share some stories of your grandmother. That really is a special time.
