Host and High Chairs

Dining Room
Hi! I hope you had a great weekend! We played catch up after a crazy week. So many changes coming our way!

I’ve already mentioned this one, but one of the big changes is a move later this summer! Exciting! So obviously it doesn’t make sense to buy anything more for the loft. In our new place, the dining room isn’t suited for a long table like this one, so I decided to let go of the host chair idea. We pulled the minty Italian chairs up to the table when I bought the little bergeres a couple weeks ago (those are now flanking the red console) I love the way they look against the chinese wallpaper!

A couple of people have emailed me about our high chair. I bought our Stokke Tripp Trapp chair on Craigslist for $75 right after we moved to the city. It’s a really great little chair for older babies (we use a Bumbo for the first six months or so), toddlers and even young kids. I love the shape and color and it’s great for us to have Evie sitting at the table with us rather than dealing with a huge big high chair situation.

Do you have a high chair you love?
What did you think?

  1. Our twins had the ikea chair which pulled up to the table, they sat with us at our dining table in the apartment. We even took them (and the chairs) to a local restaurant, a fun memory now that they are 19!

  2. I agree with you about not wanting a huge goofy looking high chair. When my little one was a baby we opted for the F-P portable chair that just straps onto a regular dining chair. It was still plasticy looking so when she turned two I bought a toddler chair from an heirloom furniture company here in Va. Its very trad mahogany with a rush seat but at least its not plastic!

  3. Can't really comment on the high chair (no kiddlets for me …yet ;) But I love the chinese wallpaper, what a great detail to add to the walls. Oh and how exciting for another home to decorate – just think of all the exciting projects!!!

  4. I had a Tripp Trapp chair just like yours when I was a kid, in fact it's still in my parents' kitchen, even though we have grown out of it. They are pretty common here in Germany.

  5. Oh, that's the chair of my childhood! Actually it was passed down from my brother (who is 10 years older than me), and know his 3 boys uses it when they visit grandma and grandpa ;) So fun to see it in your home! Thanks for the best blog!

  6. I scored two tripp trapp highchairs on craigslist for $25 each. Wooo. We love them, sturdy enough for my 3 year old to slide up to the counter and stand on if she wants to help me cook.

  7. No kiddies here either..but love the high chair! Please share how you applied the Chinese wallpaper to the walls… looks like it could be a great DIY project… love it!

and..love the mint chairs as well!

    Happy Monday!

  8. We love our Stokkes! My boys are 8 & 6 and we still use them. I always gift Stokkes and balance bikes =). Must haves… ~Nicole

  9. We bought the Minui Handysitt. Its modern and attaches directly to one of our own chairs. Thus, our daughter sits directly at the table with us, no big chair in the way either.

It also detaches and collapses flat in seconds so its not in the way if we need that seat for a guest.

  10. So exciting you will be moving this summer- can't wait to see where and what you'll do with the new space!

We have a tripp trapp (in red, too!) and it's great. We used a boon highchair until she was old enough for the tripp trapp. I'm wondering how the baby harness attachment is for the tripp trapp?? Has anyone used it? We have also used the Inglesina Fast chair which is great, very sturdy.
    Love your blog, Jenny!!!

  11. We have the Ikea Blames high chair and we love it. It's a solid painted wood frame, small scale & the tray snaps off so it can easily pull up to the table as well.

  12. Your dining room looks lovely. We have the Nook by Joovy. It folds up with one hand and so flat. Sadly I found it for kid #3. Wish I'd had it for the other two. Good luck with your move!

  13. We have and we love the very same red stokke chair :). In fact, you can see it in my blog header…Your minty green chairs DO look so nice against the chinese wallpaper! i love it all.

  14. I love the Boon highchair. It's a breeze to clean and has a cool contemporary design. I get compliments on it from everyone that walks in the door.

  15. May I simply just say what a relief to find somebody who
truly understands what they are talking about on the internet.

You definitely understand how to bring an issue to
light and make it important. A lot more people ought to read this and understand this side of the
story. It's surprising you aren't more popular because you surely have the gift.

  16. We have, and love, the Tripp Trapp. To answer another commenter, the harness is easy to use. Our son has been loving his TT since he was 5-6 months old. We got it in white, all of our other dining room chairs are white, and now I want to paint it red!

  17. We've used a Svan high chair for both girls. I bought it originally because I lived in a loft and couldn't imagine looking at one of those plastic ones out in the open all day, every day. It's very adjustable and has the bolster/tray option for the very little. There's even a dishwasher-safe cover for the tray now that makes it easier to keep crumb free.

  18. We have a Tripp Trapp too, in blue, and have loved it, but then we installed our huge kitchen island last year and haven't been able to use it (too short). It's at my parents now, but I fully expect it will last forever!

We are using the Phil and Ted's clip on chair, which is so versatile and perfect for islands. I actually wrote about it a little on my blog here in a baby guide: http://www.11thandshannon.com/2012/05/my-guide-to-baby-products.html

To the commenter who asked about the chandelier, I'm pretty sure it's Ikea that Jenny gussied up, there's a post about it somewhere on here…

  19. We love the tripp trapp. I have a Kinderzeat from my oldest (precursor to the tripp trapp with a 3 pt harness vs. a 5 pt). My youngest is using an actual Tripp Trapp currently. They make great computer chairs as the kids get older, and are great for homework and handwriting because you can support their feet, giving them more stability. Well worth the cost! I got the baby set for my youngest, and didn't love it, but it worked. Bought it on sale and resold on CL for what I paid for it.

  20. we have the boon and love it for the toddler age but now that my LO is 2, we have to decide on something else. maybe the tripp trapp will be the winner. also, are you by chance selling your fab dining set that won't work in your new space? if so, i'm interested. :)

  21. We were given a Stokke Tripp Trapp chair as a shower gift from a very generous and special friend. Ours is in natural maple and it's been great up until now. At a lanky 6 yrs old, I think my son is just about ready for a regular chair, although I hate to give up the no-fuss easy cleanup that the Tripp Trapp affords us.

  22. Hi Jenny. First, saw chairs similar to your side chairs at the merchandise mart antique sale two weeks ago! Second, we never did a high chair…I'm a huge fan of booster seats. Most are super ugly plastic, or ridiculously expensive, but we recently bought the GrowingUpGreen Bamboo Booster and love it. Eco, good looking, secure, easy to clean and the kids sit right up at the counter with us–beats other brands we've had for our two kids. Great option for those people with less space for a bulky high chair.

  23. This post makes me so relieved! I somehow acquired one of these high chairs from my dad who is given stuff all the time by his clients. I had no idea what it was (I figured that it was a plant stand that someone had rigged out of an old chair) and I tried selling it at a garage sale. By the last day I had the price lowered to $5, and nobody bought it. I'm definitely going to hang onto it for the next couple of years until I have a kid that can use it!

  24. So addicted to your blog right now! Found you in this month's BHG ^_^. I was super stoked to kind the our Tripp Trapp chair at Goodwill for $7!!! They labeled it as a step stool. Ha! Thank you for all of your great ideas and tips!
