Signing Off Early (and a little poll)

etc.

Last night was scary and weird. I have this problem where food gets stuck in my throat. Once a couple years ago an Ibuprofen liquid gel pill got stuck and it was very scary and painful. It happened again late last night and it looks like the pill did some serious damage to the lining of my throat. I’m headed into a procedure that will help us know more. The whole thing feels silly and it’s just about the worst timing. Deadlines galore and new, exciting projects that need research (I’m excited to share a big one with you in two weeks), but all of that will have to wait while I focus on getting healthy for the next few days. Thanks for your understanding while I take a little break here, too.

When I come back I’ll be sharing some cool things we’ve done in our bedroom and (hopefully) some good progress on the chevron floors. Speaking of, I’ve waffled a lot this week with the angle choice – 22.5, 30 or 45 degree cuts.

I like both the 45 and the 30 best for the space (the room is no quite wide enough for the 22.5 long slope). The two longest cuts in both the 45 and the 30 here in the photo below are what the finished cuts would actually look like (24″ long planks from miter cut to miter cut). You can see that the 45 degree angle makes for a much more narrow row than the 30 degree cut plank even though they are both 24″ long. Trigonometry at work!!

What’s your preference?

And, of course, some of my inspiration images to take you on through the rest of the week. Have a good one friends. Wish me luck with this dumb throat thing. xo

  1. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

The 45 angle gives you a busier pattern than the 30 angle, so it would depend on how you are going to decorate the rest of the room. If you are going minimalist, I'd go with the 45 angle. If there will be other things going on in the room, the 30 degree angle will fight less for dominance, and the room won't be so busy.

  2. I love your website SO much and just wanted to chime in on the well wishes. Hope things aren't too difficult for the diagnosing and healing. It's very good you're going in. My mum would suddenly choke on food occasionally, and every now and then if we were traveling and sharing a room I'd hear her snore very suddenly. Turned out her throat was closing occasionally. Important to get checked as it's easy to fix during sleep, but if you don't can cause other problems over time (due to oxygen interruption). I feel terrible that it had never occurred to me to connect them and it was years before it was corrected!! Hopefully your issue will be just as easy to fix and your throat will heal quickly.
On a more fun topic, like many love the thirty, but hard to say if that works for the scale of the room better than the 45.

  3. gah! sorry to hear about your throat, that's pretty darn scary. hopefully everything is aok and it all heals well. I'm voting for the 30, to me, it has a "softer" feel and I personally love that. get well soon!

  4. I posted about my experience having an esophageal stricture above, but for what it's worth, wanted to share this article about long term use of PPIs because it looks like there are a lot of people here who are taking these for life (nexium, omeprazole, prolisec). http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/25/combating-acid-reflux-may-bring-host-of-ills/?_r=0 My doctor prescribed omeprazole, but I never got the prescriptions filled because I'd rather try to heal myself holistically, hence drinking ACV for the acid and occasionally drinking aloe juice to soothe the esophagus (I stop drinking the ACV when I drink the aloe). I definitely don't want to advise anyone on what to do, but I think it's important for people to do research and do what you feel is best for you. Doctors often times aren't educated in holistic remedies and they often get kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies, so of course, they're going to prescribe medication. Just my two cents after dealing with this issue for a while and just recently discovering (through my acupuncturist) these remedies which are working for me.

  6. Wow, I hope you recover soon!
I'd say 45 angle since it's such a large space. otherwise 30 for less intense smaller space. Can't wait to see ;)

  7. Hope you get better soon. Sorry to hear about your throat.

Flooring-wise I prefer the 30 degree angle. The rooms with the wider angled herringbone just look more expensive. It's a beautiful look.

  8. Wow! You've gotten a lot of comments! Well I'll add mine anyway, guess you'll have some down time to read through them.
Firstly, I vote for the 45 degree angle, although either will be lovely. Also wishing you well, let the other things fall by the wayside taking care of yourself is of course the most important.
Take care, you feel like a friend, although we've never met. Shonna

  13. Firstly, I hope everything goes okay. Secondly, I'd say the 30 degree chevrons because they seem just as graphic but in a less harsh(almost) way. Everyone seems split, for sure!

    K.

  14. Take it from a 60 year old woman that took advil for years. If it is doing that to your throat imagine what its doing to the lining of your stomach and gut! It ruined mine and I am now forced to be gluten and dairy free. It may sound impossible but stop taking those pills, but do it, they are poisin!

  15. yikes, take care of your throat. I hope you feel better soon. I thought i'd like the 45 one for the thinner lines, but your shots of the 30 examples are so pretty!
