Kids Cleaning Buckets (and a HUGE Give Away!)

Accessories

I posted my cleaning schedule last week when I shared my cleaning closet redo and some of you were curious if my girls help with the household work.

Evie helps out too, but my two older girls are old enough to do some real cleaning as part of their weekly chores. To make their chores a little more exciting (a stretch, I know!) and to give them more ownership, the girls and I decided they needed their own cleaning kits. So we went to Home Depot together and shopped for some supplies to make the kits. We found a huge display with duct tape in all different colors and we thought that would make a cute (and waterproof!) decoration for simple white buckets.

We also picked up some colorful nylon cording.

The girls and I worked together to wrap the buckets in layers of the duct tape. If you roll the bucket while pulling the tape really taut, there won’t be any air bubbles or wrinkles.

Then we used a hot glue gun to wrap the handles in the nylon cording.

It’s surprising to me how putting in even a little extra effort to make something beautiful gives a household item so much more importance. My girls love these buckets and they’ve been diligently doing their chores lately! Success!

  1. Those are so cute! Right now we're in the middle of redoing our half bath/laundry room. I don't know how you get so many projects done, it seems like it takes me forever to tackle one room!

  2. Our kids aren't allowed to have friends over unless they clean up their rooms (and any other of their messes around the house) first. Voila! Instant motivation.

  3. so many projects on our to do list in the house! I would probably use it to clean and organize the basement / laundry room.

  4. How cute are those buckets?! I love the Home Depot! We're renting a home right now, but I've been brainstorming ways to keep my daughter's toys somewhat organized using something other than a bin or toybox – perhaps building a bench with space for baskets or galvanized buckets underneath? Thanks! :)

  5. Our master bedroom has been Woefully neglected since we moved in. I would use it on paint, new lighting and possibly some new curtains :)

  6. With a big move for a huge career advancement happening in the next few months, we will definitely need cleaning supplies to help on both ends of the moves! While no kids yet, I wonder if this would work for my husband…a lady can dream right?!?

  7. I love this idea! Good to start early so I think I'll make fun buckets like yours for my two year old twins…fill it with soap water and let them help me clean the bathroom!

  8. Seeing as we just purchased our first house I imagine we'll have to do a major scrub-down before we move in. I need everything!

  9. I need to create an organizational center as I commit to a home-business.
I find that children love to to chores with an adult, if they can feel like a loved adult, or if it is allowed to become fun/play. :)

  10. Such a great idea. Love the buckets! Our biggest project to tackle now is choosing colors and painting our living area.

  11. I NEED this! My husband and I just moved into our first apartment and our closet looks like something out of an episode of hoarders–needless to say, it could use a make-under.

  12. I think it would be cool to get them to try out different natural products that can be used for cleaning, then maybe have a competition to see which kinds work best.

  13. Great post! Our major organizing venture is to tackle the garage. Not the most glamorous project, I know…but getting our lawn equipment, household supplies, and sports gear organized will make the whole household run more smoothly. Mama's sanity will be restored.

  16. Our bathroom is in desperate need of a new vanity, so I would put it toward that, but I'll also be looking onto making some cleaning buckets for my kids – great idea!

  17. Really every room in our new house needs some attention, but my boys have their heart set on a custom treehouse for our big backyard. This would be awesome!

  18. Wow! what an awesome giveaway! To get kids inspired to clean we play the color game…I say "pick up anything that is green!" and they love it! It really works. I am buying a new home and would love this money to Home Depot! I would feel so happy!
